An unlikely rescue story out of Utah is reminding people just how resilient wildlife can be. According to CBS News, a young great horned owl is on the road to recovery after workers at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab spent days carefully removing hardened concrete from his feathers. The bird had accidentally fallen into a cement mixer at Black Desert Resort, leaving his face, chest and wing encased in dried debris.
Sanctuary staff acted fast to ensure the owl could breathe, then began the slow process of chipping off the concrete with forceps and gently cleaning his feathers with toothbrushes, dish soap and their own hands. The sanctuary described him as a fighter, and his determination paid off. After two weeks of round the clock care, he was able to fly again and is now recovering in an aviary while he regrows the feathers he needs for silent flight.
Great horned owls rely on a soft downy coating that lets them glide without sound as they hunt. Concrete damaged that natural adaptation, causing the bird to make a whooshing noise when he flies. Sanctuary leaders explained that he will not be released until he molts new feathers, likely next spring or summer, ensuring he can survive on his own in his natural habitat. When he is ready, workers plan to return him to a safe nearby area where he can thrive on the earth without the dangers of construction zones.
Stories like this highlight how deeply connected our environment, our health and the wellbeing of vulnerable animals are. When people choose to protect habitats and Support plant based and vegan values, it creates a world where creatures like this owl have a chance to flourish.
Take this as inspiration to live in ways that nurture animals and protect the environment every day.
