Reaching a max wing span of up to 23 feet and weighing in at over 4,000 pounds, these giant oceanic manta rays sure do look like they can pack an awfully big punch! But as shown by diver, Cris Cilfone, there is no need to fret.
Despite their size, oceanic mantas are actually harmless and they love to snack on the oceans smallest organisms such as zooplankton, small shrimp, and worms. Although mantas are considered to be stingrays, they lack a stinging barb and are unable to inflict harm on curious divers.
Sadly, their kind nature does not help to guard them against population decline. Both species of manta (oceanic and reef mantas) are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Manta rays often become entangled in fishing nets, and they are also targeted for the Chinese medicine trade.
Join these divers and their GoPro on a manta adventure off of the coast of Maui, Hawaii, and see what makes these creatures so incredible.
