It is always so heartbreaking to hear stories about the terrible things people do to animals. As animal lovers, we can hardly even imagine doing any sort of harm to animals, but unfortunately, not everyone shares the same view.

There is not very much known about what happened to Coen, the dog, but from his current state, we know it was not good. When volunteers from Secondhand Hounds came across Coen in a shelter in Kansas City, Missouri, he was missing patches of fur and his body was covered with burns and open wounds. Knowing that if he were left at the shelter, he would surely be euthanized, the volunteers took him in and gave him a second chance at life.

Jane Mesna, Coen’s foster guardian, told a local Missouri news station, “The shelter suggested somebody had actually doused him in gasoline or acid…We were heartbroken and he was just laying there, kind of licking his wounds and everything like that, but he just absolutely stole our hearts.”

The news release adds that it is a common misconception for pet owners to douse their dogs in burnt motor oil to treat mange, so it is believed that whoever was caring for Diego thought the oil would help.

A generous donor funded Coen’s transport to Minnesota, where he is being cared for by Secondhand Hounds. The veterinarians carrying for little Coen believe he may suffer from an auto-immune disease. It is clear that Coen’s journey to a full recovery will be a long one that is rather costly.  To help cover Coen’s medical treatment, Secondhand Hounds has launched an online fundraiser. So far, the outpouring of Support for this poor abused dog has been incredible, but he still needs some help!

You can take action and help Coen along his road to recovery by donating to the Secondhand Hounds Fighter Fund, here. We’re sure if he could, Coen would give you a big sloppy kiss as a thank you!

  1. Poor, Poor Coen. I can only imagine the horrific pain he had to endure. Let the punishment to his tormenter fit the crime. God bless the beasts and children.
