As we learn more about the impact plastic has on our planet, more people are deciding to change their habits. Some consumers are ditching plastic water bottles and opting for tap or filtered water in a reusable bottle. While this is a great habit to get into, there is a chance some might still need to purchase water, so Tesco has thought of a brilliant scheme to allow people to purchase water without the damaging effects of plastic!

Tesco has teamed up with the brand CanO Water to roll out the cans of spring water in 700 stores across the U.K., The Good Shopping Guide reports. The cans are made out of recyclable aluminum, and the water itself is sourced from the Alps.

“Aluminium cans have the highest recycling rate of any product out there and a recycled can could be back on the shelf as another one in just 60 days,” said Ariel Booker, CanO Water’s co-founder.

According to the CanO website, around 75 percent of all aluminum produced since 1888 is still in productive use, and recycling the material uses only around 5 percent of the energy and emissions needed to initially make it. Moreover, the company emphasizes that the average aluminum can is “made from 68 percent total recycled content, the highest of any beverage container.”

The cans are clearly a more sustainable solution to plastic bottles, which can take up to hundreds of years to break down once thrown away. Using your own reusable bottle is still the less wasteful and more environmentally-friendly option for getting all the H2O you need on the go – but with water cans available in stores, plastic bottles will no longer be the only option if you forget your own or have no way to fill it.

  1. This is a step in the right direction, but I\’m still amused at how easily people have been brainwashed into paying 2000% more for water than you can get at home. Where do people think bottled water comes from? Most of it comes out of the same sources as city water. Just drink a glass of water and get on with it. You really don\’t need to have a plastic water bottle in your had at all times.
