A young woman stays hydrated by drinking water from a bottle while exercising in a green, sunlit park on a beautiful morning.

Water is essential for life, yet most people underestimate just how much they need to thrive. According to CNN, hydration is about more than simply sipping eight glasses a day — it depends on your body size, activity level, climate, and even the food you eat. Since roughly 60% of the human body is water, staying hydrated is vital for balance, energy, and overall health.

When you fall behind, your blood thickens, your heart pumps harder, and your brain feels foggy. Even mild dehydration can leave you moody, sluggish, and unfocused. On the flip side, too much water without enough sodium — especially during endurance sports — can be dangerous, which is why balance matters. Experts suggest watching your urine color as a simple check: pale yellow means you’re on track, darker shades usually signal dehydration.

The National Academy of Medicine recommends about 3.7 liters daily for men and 2.7 liters for women, with about 20% of that coming from food. Eating water-rich fruits and vegetables not only boosts hydration but also supports a plant-based lifestyle that helps protect the environment and conserves resources. It takes far less water to grow produce than to raise animals for meat, so your hydration and diet choices can directly benefit the planet.

Hydration also ties to disease prevention. In one clinical trial, women prone to urinary tract infections who added just 1.5 liters of water daily cut infections nearly in half. Beyond the physical benefits, carrying a reusable bottle instead of buying single-use plastic reduces waste and keeps harmful plastics out of oceans and wildlife habitats.

The best hydration routine is the one you’ll actually keep. Whether that’s plain water, tea, or fruit-infused drinks, the key is consistency. Staying hydrated keeps your body strong while also making choices that protect animals, the planet, and your long-term wellbeing.

Choose water, choose plants, and choose to care for yourself and the world around you — every sip can make a difference.
