Relocating to a new state with your pet in tow can feel like a grand adventure. However, the journey requires careful preparation, as U.S. states have unique regulations about moving with animals. Whether you’re a dog person or a cat enthusiast, Hire a Helper gathered some crucial insights that can make your transition smoother.

With a stringency score of 69.7 out of 100, Hawaii is the most challenging state to move with pets. To maintain its century-long rabies-free status, it demands that both dogs and cats have two rabies vaccinations and an antibody test, or else they face quarantine. Not far behind are New York and Nebraska, with scores of 68.7, necessitating health certificates and vaccinations.

Conversely, North Carolina, with a modest score of 13.8, is the most lenient state for incoming cats and dogs, followed closely by New Jersey (14.8) and Maine (25). Intriguingly, New Jersey doesn’t require dogs to be vaccinated for rabies when moving into the state, a unique case in the nation.

There’s an interesting dichotomy when it comes to pet import rules. California, Michigan, New Jersey, Iowa, and Tennessee have stricter dog regulations than cats. This is particularly evident in California, where dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and carry a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI), while cats have no such obligations.

Looking at the rules regionally, the northern part of the country tends to have stricter regulations, with the Northeastern states of New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts leading the pack in CVI requirements. The South, including states like Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Alabama, hold tighter rabies vaccination rules.

It’s crucial to note that, according to the CDC, dogs have traditionally been associated with rabies, but there are more rabid cats than dogs in the U.S. This may prompt a rethink of the differential rules applied to dogs and cats.

Navigating the pet import regulations landscape can be overwhelming, but our furry friends are worth it. Before packing up and moving, research the requirements of your destination state. Most importantly, plan for vaccinations, health checks, and documentation in advance.
