According to the CDC, flu vaccinations can prevent an estimated 7.5 million influenza illnesses, 3.7 million influenza-associated medical visits, 105,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations, and 6,300 influenza-associated deaths. Unfortunately, most vaccines are made using millions of eggs that are sourced from chickens that are kept in secret locations across the country.

One egg yields one and a half doses of flu vaccine, and the estimates of this year’s supply of influenza vaccines are 173.5 to 183.5 million doses. This means that over 140 million eggs will be used. Although it may be difficult to switch vaccines to using something other than eggs, it is necessary and something that we need to work toward.
Egg-base flu shots use a virus that is grown in chicken eggs, and the CDC says that around 80 percent of the vaccine supply for the 2022-2023 flu season will be produced through this method. Cell-based flu shots are made without eggs, and they contain a virus grown in a cell culture. A recombinant shot does not use eggs and is made from synthetic ingredients.
Unfortunately, despite these other methods, egg-based vaccines remain the most common. Luckily, egg-based vaccines have not been proven to be more effective. If we shifted away from egg-based vaccines, we could save millions of eggs and hens that are forced to live in confinement.
