Not only did the chickens all look sick, but they looked like they were covered in mites. “They were gasping for air, I assumed that they were just starving. They didn’t have enough resources there. We’re gonna get them in quarantine and give them food, water, and medication. We’re gonna do everything we can for them, and hopefully, they’re going to be okay,” said Willis Willow Farm & Animal Sanctuary.

In an update video, the sanctuary shared footage of the 31 rescue chickens exploring their new clean stall with plenty of food and water, which is something they’ve sadly never experienced. “They keep stretching. I don’t know that they were able to do that before. They were living on top of each other, and fighting each other to survive,” said Willis Willow Farm & Animal Sanctuary. These poor chickens have never lived in such a spacious home, and it took some time for them to get used to it.

Chickens are some of the most misunderstood and mistreated animals. Chickens are often forced to live in small sheds where they will likely never get to see grass or fresh air in their lifetimes. When chickens are cooped up in small spaces for too long, they can develop disease and infection, start to feel very stressed and become aggressive and start pecking each other and even pulling feathers. While most people overlook the suffering that these animals experience in their short lives, animal sanctuaries such as Willis Willow Farm & Animal Sanctuary are actively working towards giving them the life of freedom that they deserve.
