The expansion of SpaceX’s southern Texas location has been linked to a decline in various bird species in the area, according to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, has already harmed the surrounding wildlife and shorebird species, reported Bloomberg. Elon Musk’s company wants to expand the location even further by adding a second launch and landing pad where the Starship rocket can leave from. The surrounding area is inhabited by wetland ecosystems and various species that are suffering from the launch pad.
Before SpaceX can launch orbital ventures from the location, the Federal Aviation Administration needs to assess and approve. The letter from the US Fish and Wildlife Service is a part of the review that started in 2020 but has been pushed back since. They hope to complete the assessment by the end of this month.
Some of the birds that have seen population declines include the snow and the piping plover.
“It is not clear what happened to the ‘missing’ plovers, but if SpaceX activities have resulted in the loss of over half the Boca Chica population then the entire critical habitat is being impacted,” the US Fish and Wildlife Service said in a letter.

Although the “missing birds” are not definitively linked to the Starbase site, the US Fish and Wildlife Service says that it’s likely it could be from rocket tests and explosions, loss of habitat from rocket debris, injury to internal organs from testing, and general displacement from noise pollution from the base. We are constantly taking over wildlife habitats and ecosystems and we are seeing a change in behaviors and the impact that Climate change is having on the planet. We need to fight for the animals and not take over their homes!
