According to a petition on Care2, six animals are killed every minute in shelters across America. That is 9,000 animals who are unnecessarily killed every single day. A primary reason for these deaths is the lack of space to house them all. As the largest no-kill animal shelter in the United States, Best Friends Animal Society has been saving innocent lives from euthanasia for the past thirty years. They have helped decrease the annual pet euthanasia rate from 17 million to four million. However, they want this number to be zero.
If you consider yourself an animal lover, please take a moment to sign this petition to end the unnecessary euthanasia of the millions of innocent animals in U.S. shelters.
The fight for homeless animals does not end with signing this petition, however. There are many things you can do on a daily basis to help save these individuals. If you are able to add a new animal friend to your family, please always adopt from shelters and rescue organizations, and never buy animals from pet shops. Unfortunately, most pet shops only get their animals from puppy mills or irresponsible breeders.
If you cannot adopt, please consider fostering a shelter animal. Fostering saves lives by creating space at shelters and rescues for more abandoned animals. Plus, you get the joy and satisfaction of helping take care of an innocent animal and preparing them for a future in a forever home. If you cannot foster an animal, please consider volunteering your time at your local animal shelter and donating to rescue organizations you admire. Lastly, remember to always spay and neuter. Ending overpopulation in shelters begins with dedicated animal lovers like you!
