According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress and environmental activist Shailene Woodley has fully embraced her inner “cat lady,” adopting two dark-furred rescues named Bear and Pharrah. The Big Little Lies star, long known for her earthy lifestyle and passion for sustainability, says her shift from dog devotee to cat lover has deepened her understanding of humanity’s bond with animals.
Woodley was recently spotted at Animal Haven, a Manhattan shelter, helping promote Mars Petcare’s global adoption initiative and recording a sleep story for the mindfulness app Calm — a soothing tale designed to help both humans and pets relax. For Woodley, who has long advocated for animal welfare, this project reflects her belief that caring for animals is deeply tied to protecting the environment. “The only thing that really makes sense in life is nature,” she told THR. “We are part of this symbiotic relationship and ecosystem.”
Her transition from life with her late German shepherd to sharing her home with two lively cats feels like a natural evolution for someone so connected to the rhythms of the environment. Bear, known for his playful energy, and Pharrah, whom Woodley calls “love embodied,” embody the companionship and emotional balance that pets can bring — something science has backed, with studies showing that animals can significantly reduce stress and anxiety and improve overall health.
While Woodley’s cats don’t have the red-carpet privileges of Hollywood’s pampered pets, they serve a more meaningful purpose: reminding us of our shared duty to care for all living beings. Her message is clear — adoption saves lives, and compassion for animals mirrors compassion for the planet.
Choosing adoption, plant-based living, or supporting local shelters are small but powerful steps toward a kinder, healthier world. The Earth — and every creature on it — deserves that love.
