Being allergic to cats is one of life’s cruelest jokes—especially for people who can’t imagine a home without furry friends. The good news? You don’t have to choose between breathing clearly and loving animals. Modern science (and a lot of vacuuming) has your back.

According to WIRED’s Molly Higgins, cat allergies stem from a sticky little protein called Fel d 1, found in feline saliva and skin oils. When cats groom themselves, that protein spreads to fur and dander, clinging to everything from your sofa to your favorite hoodie. Around 15 to 30 percent of people have allergic reactions to cats or dogs—so if you’re sneezing, you’re in very good company.

Fortunately, there are ways to make peace with your pet. Start with your home environment: hardwood floors trap less dander than carpets, and running air purifiers can dramatically cut down on allergens floating through your space. Wet-cleaning surfaces and washing bedding frequently are simple but powerful steps. And yes, brushing your cat helps too—just do it outside and follow with a good vacuum session.

Diet can also make a surprising difference. Studies have shown that feeding cats an egg-derived additive can reduce active Fel d 1 in their saliva and dander. One product, Pacagen, uses antibodies from eggs to bind and neutralize allergens before they spread. It’s not magic, but it’s a big leap forward for people who want to keep their cats close without the itchy eyes and runny nose.

If symptoms persist, talk to your doctor about allergy medications or immunotherapy. Over time, some people even build up tolerance naturally. With a few adjustments—and maybe an upgraded air purifier—you can share your home with cats, not their allergens.

Loving your pets shouldn’t come at the cost of your health. So keep the fur babies close, the floors clean, and your HEPA filters humming. Small changes can make your shared planet a lot more comfortable for everyone.
