SeaWorld’s PR machine continues to spin at full cycle, as the corporation tries to make us believe that they have the best interests of animals at heart. Their latest stunt? Wild whale and dolphin watching tours, which are scheduled to take place in Patagonia, Argentina.
The other tours on offer include a dogsled excursion to Canada (where a shiny, happy version of the region’s dogsled industry will be presented to guests) and a safari trip to South Africa or Zimbabwe (where guests are invited to partake in “a rhino experience”).
SeaWorld’s sudden willingness to advertise the wonders of whales and dolphins in the wild would seem to contradict their stance on how great captivity is. After all, don’t their animals just love living in concrete tanks? And aren’t the wild whales of this world so unfortunate to be missing out on the wonders of a Shamu show?
In their latest holiday brochure, the entertainment giant says: “Nature is a wondrous place, full of amazing scenery, unparalleled beauty and amazing wildlife. The world was made for exploring, and SeaWorld Excursions are a unique way for you to connect with your inner explorer. At SeaWorld, we are passionate about wildlife and wild places, and our SeaWorld experts will help lead your adventure making sure you don’t miss that sloth hidden up in the tree, or that dolphin that likes to jump at the bow of your ship.”
Hmm… if they’re really so passionate about wildlife and wild places, why do they continue to hold orcas and dolphins in tiny concrete tanks? And why do they refuse to openly condemn the brutal dolphin drive hunts of Taiji, where hundreds of wild dolphins meet their deaths every year?
Still, as you peruse their shiny new brochure, SeaWorld invites you to forget about all that inconvenient stuff, because: “We take care of all the details so you can enjoy your experience. Your trip guide is not only an expert on animals and ecosystems, but a passionate storyteller and an expert on making sure every detail is taken care of.”
Sounds relaxing. Perhaps they should send Tilikum on one of these fantastic holidays – we’re sure he could use the break.
