Rescue Dog Was Given Two Weeks To Live, Now Celebrating Birthday

Senior dog

In 2017, an elderly rescue dog named Chester was given a mere two weeks to live due to severe health issues and neglect. Fast forward to the present day, and Chester is set to celebrate his remarkable 23rd birthday. With the love and care of his devoted human, Anna Lopez, Chester’s story has become a testament to the resilience of senior dogs and the transformative power of compassion.

Anna Lopez, a resident of Pensacola, Florida, first learned about Chester through a Facebook post by the Escambia County Animal Shelter. At the age of 17, Chester had been surrendered to the shelter by his neglectful owner and was in desperate need of medical attention and a loving home. Touched by his plight, Anna knew she had to take action. She recalls, “I knew I had to have him. I couldn’t believe a 17-year-old dog was sitting in the shelter.” Despite his age and health issues, Anna was determined to give Chester the life he deserved.

Chester’s story is unfortunately not unique. Many senior dogs end up in shelters due to various reasons, including the passing of their humans and the economic hardships faced by their families. These older canines often have specific medical needs, making it harder for them to find new homes. Yet, Anna Lopez and her husband, Buddy Fajota, have dedicated their lives to caring for elderly and special needs dogs, exemplifying the compassion and commitment that can transform these animals’ lives.

Chester’s journey to health was not without its challenges. When Anna brought him home, he was in a dire state, suffering from dental issues, heartworm, skin allergies, and arthritis, among other ailments. Chester’s prognosis was grim, with veterinarians giving him only a week or two to live. Undeterred, Anna embarked on a mission to save him. She opted for dental surgery despite the risks, and though it was a rocky road, Chester pulled through.

One of the most touching aspects of Chester’s journey is Anna’s refusal to give up. When traditional treatments for his heartworm condition were deemed too risky, Anna turned to holistic methods. After two years of dedicated care, Chester’s heartworm condition was successfully treated without resorting to high-risk interventions. This determination not only saved Chester’s life but also exemplifies the power of creative and compassionate caregiving.

Today, Chester is a picture of health and happiness. A recent vet checkup confirmed his improved condition, with only medicated drops required for his dry eyes. Anna describes Chester as “living the life he deserves,” enjoying his days with freedom and love. Despite his previous hardships, Chester now has the opportunity to be himself and experience the joys of life.
