Questions Surround Tesla Gigafactory 2

Located in Buffalo, N.Y., the Tesla Gigafactory 2 was supposed to create over 1,500 jobs and build local infrastructure. The “Gigafactory 2” was based on Tesla’s original Gigafactory located in Nevada. However, media outlets suggest that it has fallen short of the lofty ideal set by its predecessor. Despite original excitement, the Gigafactory 2 does not appear to have warranted the excitement then-governor Anthony Cuomo expressed in 2013 when plans for the factory were approved. The factory was designed to build a special type of solar panel. New York state spent around 950 million building and equipping the “Gigafactory 2”. In return for the state’s investment, Tesla would create 1,500 jobs or face paying a hefty fine. Tesla pays one dollar a year in lease costs for the space.

Despite the agreement, the “Gigafactory 2” webpage says that it has created 800 jobs. However, the page does also state that as operations increase, more jobs will be created. It is also important to remember that, in the years between the factory’s opening and now, the world has faced the COVID-19 pandemic, uncertain financial trends, and the war between Russia and Ukraine. Despite these setbacks, the company reported having created 1,700 jobs in February 2023. However, critics are also pointing out that none of the expected spin-off development from the plant has materialized.

Tesla has experienced climbing value and rising share prices. However, the “Gigafactory 2” has experienced a devaluation of roughly one billion dollars. This has led to it being described as a “boondoggle” by the New York Post. A boondoggle refers to something that gives the appearance of having value but is pointless. In this case, despite the need for the growth of infrastructure producing renewable energy, many find it to be an accurate description.

Solar energy, along with other forms of renewable energy, is key to fighting the climate crisis. Right now, fossil fuels contribute 75% of greenhouse gas emissions according to the United Nations. Replacing fossil fuels with energy from renewable sources would greatly reduce these emissions. Indeed, if we are to stave off some of the worst effects of Climate change, we need to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy by 2050

The “Gigafactory 2” seemed to offer a great solution to make this a reality. However, they are installing solar panels at a rate much lower than previously hoped. Additionally, reports have found that the majority of employees are not engaged in solar energy-related manufacturing. Instead, most employees work at desks analyzing data. Despite this, the landing page for the Gigafactory 2 promises to make Buffalo “a hub for sustainable innovation and advanced manufacturing.”
