Having a cat or dog might be one of the best things you can do for your happiness, according to new research led by the University of Kent. In a study covered by Olivia Miller and published by University of Kent, researchers found that companion animals boost human life satisfaction and well-being almost as much as family and close friends do.

Using the “life satisfaction approach,” a method developed by economists, the team measured the impact of pets in monetary terms. They discovered that having a cat or dog could be worth up to £70,000 a year in life satisfaction. To put it in perspective, this is similar to the satisfaction boost typically linked to marriage, based on life satisfaction surveys in Great Britain.

This study, published in Social Indicators Research, offers strong evidence that pets are more than just cute companions. Dr. Adelina Gschwandtner from Kent’s School of Economics, Politics and International Relations, who co-led the research with Dr. Michael Gmeiner of the London School of Economics, said, “Pets care for us and there is a significant monetary value associated with their companionship.”

Beyond the emotional benefits, the research also revealed some interesting personality trends among pet owners. Cat caregivers tend to be more open, while dog caregivers are generally more extroverted, agreeable, and less neurotic. Overall, pet owners appear more open, conscientious, and outgoing compared to those without pets.

If you’re looking for a reason to adopt, this study makes it clear: bringing a rescue animal into your home could boost your well-being in ways you never imagined. Adopting instead of shopping not only saves lives but might just make yours better too. Visit your local shelter and meet your new best friend today!
