Remote-work flexibility may have felt like a lifesaver for animal lovers, but as employers tighten return-to-office policies, many furry companions are feeling the heat. Lockdown-era pups that grew accustomed to constant human company are suddenly facing long hours on their own, leaving anxious owners scrambling for solutions. Dog day care, pet sitters, and specialized toys can help, but not everyone has the time or resources to make it work seamlessly.

According to a recent Business Insider article featuring dog trainer Malena DeMartini, owners should start preparing their pets for solo time well before a strict mandate hits. Without gradual separation training, dogs can become stressed, potentially wrecking your couch or howling all day. Overcrowded shelters are also seeing the fallout, with some people feeling forced to rehome animals when they can’t juggle work and pet care. Experts emphasize that even the most devoted caregiver benefits from a dog that’s comfortable alone for a few hours.

There’s no one-size-fits-all fix, but exposure therapy-style exercises—short departures, working up to extended absences—can do wonders. A few minutes here and there can build a dog’s tolerance and confidence. Crate training is another tool that fosters independence and self-soothing. While separation anxiety can be serious, it’s not the only reason dogs act out. Recording your pet’s behavior is an easy way to tell whether it’s truly anxiety or simply boredom. And while medication is an option for severe cases, it’s often best combined with consistent training and professional guidance.

Building a routine now benefits everyone—both two- and four-legged. Work life may be in flux, but your pet still deserves the best. If your boss insists on office time, consider rotating dog-walk shifts or teaming up with neighbors for a pet-sitting exchange.
