California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered residents to stay home except for essential trips on March 19, New York’s Governor Cuomo did the same on March 22. New York state and suburbs now encompass 5% of global cases.

All “non-essential businesses” in both states are closed. California’s 40 million residents must stay inside. Essential businesses in California include gas stations, pharmacies and grocery stores.  “This is not a permanent state, this is a moment in time,” Newsom said in a news conference. “We will look back at these decisions as pivotal.”

States‘ deemed that essential businesses are open for people to walk in and shop, including:

  • Pharmacies and health providers
  • Grocery stores
  • Gas stations
  • Food banks,
  • Convenience stores
  • News outlets
  • Banks
  • Laundromats.
  • Restaurants must be take-out food and deliveries

Businesses that must close include:

  • Dine-in restaurants
  • Bars
  • Nightclubs
  • Entertainment spaces where people gather, including malls and convention centers
  • Gyms and fitness studios

In New York, stores must also implement rules to keep people six feet apart while shopping.

In New York, Cuomo spoke about overcrowding in areas in New York City. He called out crowds in Prospect Park as people by March 22 still hadn’t seemed to heed the “social distancing” warning. “There is a density level in New York City that is wholly inappropriate.”

Cuomo said during his Sunday briefing. ” It is insensitive. It is arrogant. It is self-destructive. It’s disrespectful to other people and it has to stop and it has to stop now. This is not a joke and I am not kidding.”

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio echoed Cuomo’s statement, “Do your part: stay home. That is the single most important thing someone can do right now. Protect yourself and save lives: only go out for the essentials.”

Cuomo said the mandates were meant to protect hospitals and slow the spread of the virus to prevent hospitals from getting overwhelmed, “All we’re trying to do is slow the spread, but it will spread.”
