Longevity Drugs Could Help Dogs Live Longer, Healthier Lives

A future where dogs live longer and healthier lives might be closer than we think. According to Labiotech, San Francisco biotech company Loyal is developing three potential longevity drugs that could extend the lifespan and improve the health of dogs, especially large breeds that tend to age faster.

Two of Loyal’s leading candidates, LOY-001 and LOY-003, target an overactive growth hormone called insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which is linked to aging and early mortality in large dogs. LOY-001 would be delivered as an injection every few months by a vet, while LOY-003 could be taken as a tablet at home. By reducing IGF-1 levels, scientists hope to slow the accelerated aging that has long been an unfortunate side effect of breeding for size.

The third drug, LOY-002, focuses on improving dogs’ metabolic health to delay diseases linked to aging. Early trials have shown it may even reverse some age-related decline. Loyal’s “STAY” study, now underway at over 50 veterinary clinics across the U.S., will track more than 1,000 dogs over four years to assess lifespan and quality of life outcomes.

These treatments could be a milestone for pet health — and perhaps for humans, too. Researchers like Nir Barzilai at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine note that dogs share our diets, microbiomes, and disease risks, making them excellent models for studying human aging. If the FDA approves Loyal’s drugs — possibly as early as 2025 — it might not only help pets live longer, but also unlock new insights into longevity for people.
