Leicester, England has recently been acknowledged as the birthplace of veganism, owing to the pioneering efforts of Donald Watson, a man whose legacy continues to inspire millions around the world. The story traces back to the 1940s when Donald Watson, along with his wife Dorothy, resided in the heart of Leicester. It was during this time that they embarked on a journey that would change the culinary landscape forever. Donald Watson, a woodwork teacher by profession, had a profound encounter with the realities of animal slaughter at a young age. Witnessing the slaughter of a pig on his uncle’s farm, he decided to become vegetarian at the tender age of 14.
As his awareness of animal cruelty expanded, Donald delved deeper into the ethics of food production. Learning about the harsh realities behind milk and egg production, he felt compelled to adopt a diet devoid of all animal products. However, in the 1940s, there was no term to encapsulate this lifestyle choice. During a visit to the Palais de Danse in Humberstone Gate Donald and Dorothy Watson conceived a term that would come to define a movement. Combining the first three and last two letters of “vegetarian,” they coined the term “vegan,” giving voice to a philosophy centered on compassion and ethical living.
The significance of this occasion is now immortalized with the installation of a heritage panel on Evesham Road, where Donald Watson once resided. This panel stands as a testament to the indelible mark he left on the world, right from the heart of Leicester.
Amit Gokani, a member of the Leicester Vegetarian and Vegan Group, reflects on Donald Watson’s vision with happiness. He describes Watson as a man driven by compassion, a visionary who believed in the possibility of a better world. For Watson, veganism was not just a dietary choice; it was a moral imperative—a means to challenge the prevailing norms of exploitation and violence. Today, as the world increasingly embraces plant-based lifestyles, the legacy of Donald Watson resonates more profoundly than ever.
