Animal cruelty has once again reared its ugly head, this time at an equine therapy center in Cornwall, where three individuals have been sentenced for their heartless actions. James Baker, 55, and Sarah Baker, 33, alongside Darren Laker, 46, all hailing from Par, have been held accountable for their roles in causing unnecessary suffering to horses, ponies, a donkey, and even a goat. The Bakers, who operated a community interest company named Family Nest Equine Therapy, found themselves entangled in a web of cruelty that led to the demise of several innocent creatures under their care. Darren Laker, the center’s yard manager, was also implicated.
The severity of their crimes cannot be overstated. The Bakers faced the wrath of justice as they were each sentenced to nine months in prison for every count, albeit suspended for two years. Laker, too, received a suspended 12-week prison sentence. The court, led by Judge Simon Carr, didn’t mince words, condemning the defendants for subjecting these animals to suffering.
These animals, meant to serve as comfort to those who need it, instead endured neglect and torment. Concerns arose when members of the public witnessed animals in a state of malnourishment and distress, prompting intervention. Judge Carr didn’t hold back in his condemnation, labeling it as one of the worst cases of animal neglect he had witnessed.
Miranda Albinson, an inspector at the RSPCA, said “Animals are completely reliant on their owners to ensure their needs are met and they are kept safe and healthy. Owning an animal is a privilege and ensuring appropriate care is a key part of the responsibility we have towards them.”
