Animal companions are our best friends and family members, and as such, we love to take them everywhere with us. However, taking them on flights can have some terrifying results.
According to a petition on Care2, a five-year-old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel tragically died on a United Airlines flight after she was neglected in the cargo hold during a two-hour flight delay.
Sadly, LuLu’s story is not an isolated one. Beloved companion animals die in airplane cargo at shocking rates, with United Airlines ranked as the worst airline for pet deaths. From January 2012 to February 2017, an alarming 53 animals died on United Airlines flights. Something major needs to be done now to end these tragedies.
Please take a moment to sign the petition demanding immediate policy changes and justice for LuLu and all animals like her who have lost their lives due to neglect on airplanes.
Each airline has its own animal policy with restrictions to what animals are allowed to stay with their guardians in the cabin, and what animals are forced to be checked in like luggage and stored as cargo. If you absolutely must fly with your beloved pet, please check with airlines to see if they will allow your pet to stay with you in the cabin. If they require the animal to be stored as cargo, please reconsider. Stored as cargo, animals are also treated like cargo, and they can suffer from dehydration, organ failure, ailments from extreme stress, and death.
If you are merely leaving town for a trip, then finding a reliable pet sitter or boarding facility are much safer options. If you are moving somewhere, taking a car instead of a plane could potentially save your beloved animal’s life.
Many people are unaware of the shocking cases of neglect and deaths on airplanes, so please share this with your network to help spread awareness!
