Bezos told CNN that he wants to give generously to individuals who work to fight “division” in American politics and public life. Although no specific amount, timeline, or details were given, this marks the first time that he has announced plans to give away most of his money.

In recent years, Bezos has gotten a lot of backlash for night signing the Giving Pledge, a promise by hundreds of the world’s richest people to Donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes. The Giving Pledge was started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.

“The hard part is figuring out how to do it in a levered way,” Bezos told CNN.

In addition, Bezos and his partner, Lauren Sanchez, also announced that they had awarded a $100 million grant to Dolly Parton for her to disburse to charities of Parton’s choice. Bezos made a similar donation in 2021 to Van Jones and chef José Andrés.

Bezos has faced controversy over the role of his company and Climate change. The company allegedly tried to silence employees that spoke out against the company’s role in carbon emissions. In September 2019, Bezos announced Amazon’s new climate change initiatives, including a partnership with the Nature Conservancy and a goal for carbon neutrality. This came after Amazon employees formed a coalition to march in protest of the company for the Climate Strike.

The United Nations recently released a report warning countries about the dangers of climate change. They also urged people to reduce their dairy and meat intake by opting for more plant-based foods as one way to take climate action.
