A woman saw a flying fox dragging herself on the road after being hit by a car and knew that she needed to help. She quickly found a crate to contain the poor injured creature and even put cones around to make sure that no cars drove near. Thinking on her feet, the woman called the RSPCA, and the crew was able to come to rescue the adorable flying fox.

The flying fox, Ivy, had a bath and some fruit and is recovering well from her injuries! Ivy even got to go outside and bask in the sun. She looks so happy to finally be safe!

Unfortunately, Ivy needs to have physiotherapy on her wings each day to help with her injuries from being hit by a car.
“She is a star patient and enjoys stretching her wings,” Jasmine Vink, a bat rehabilitator and ecologist in Australia helping Ivy with her recovery journey.
Although Ivy had a long way to go to be fully healed, she was doing great and taking advantage of the fruit buffet at the animal rescue!

Finally, after a lot of work, Ivy graduated out of Vink’s care and into a flight aviary! In the flight aviary, she will work for a few weeks to complete her healing and get her strength back up to what it was. In the meantime, she has other flying fox friends to hang out with before she will ultimately be released back into the wild.

Vink urges the public never to touch bats yourself. She explains that she is a vaccinated and licensed bat rehabilitator and ecologist with the proper training on how to care for these animals. Always call for professional help if you find an animal in need of help.
Most people think that bats are terrifying, bloodthirsty animals. This misconception largely comes from fictional films featuring bats or bat-like characters, but because of these imaginary portrayals of bats, these creatures get a pretty bad rap. What most people don’t know is that bats play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. These animals help to pollinate a large portion of our food supply and control mosquito populations. Unfortunately, bat populations are dwindling due to habitat loss and the spread of a disease called white-nose syndrome. Without bats, nearly half of the fruits we enjoy wouldn’t exist, and insect populations would be out of control. Luckily, many organizations are working to help the bat population recover.
