A devastating fire erupted at Farina Farms Inc., a poultry farm in southern Illinois, on Wednesday night, resulting in the loss of over one million chickens and causing extensive property damage. The fire, which started around 6:30 p.m., required the combined efforts of more than 15 fire departments to control the massive blaze.
Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps reported to local media, including Fox 2 and KSDK, that at least three buildings were engulfed in flames reaching heights of 13,000 to 15,000 feet. Despite the intense efforts, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.
One of the responding units, the Beckemeyer Volunteer Fire Department from Clinton County, detailed their experience on Facebook after returning from the scene at approximately 4:30 a.m. The department, which contributed 30,000 gallons of water, described the operation as immense, with numerous moving parts and dedicated volunteers working tirelessly to contain the fire. “Hats off to everyone involved, especially those volunteering,” the post read. “Should make for a long day at work today for most of us.”
The fire was fully extinguished by Thursday morning. No human injuries were reported, but the farm, housing 1.2 million chickens, is likely a total loss. Farina Farms Inc., part of the Wabash Valley Produce complex, had its buildings empty at the time the fire started, according to employees. Wabash Valley Produce is ranked as the 24th largest egg producer in the United States, with operations spanning Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, as noted in WATT Global Media’s 2024 Top Egg Company Survey.
