When you meet someone who seems to love your animal companions as much as you do, it can seem too good to be true. This seemed to be the case for one Reddit user, who met their romantic partner at an animal shelter. The Reddit poster was there to adopt a dog. Their future partner was volunteering at the shelter. The pair’s mutual love of animals initially drew them together. According to the Reddit poster, their boyfriend was also initially great with their animals. The poster has three dogs, two cats, and a turtle. However, their boyfriend never interacted with them unsupervised.

All seemed well. However, the poster got a nasty shock when they met their boyfriend’s parents for the first time. His parents warned the original poster not to leave their son alone with her animals for any reason. According to his parents, the “reason they didn’t have any pets was because their son would end up killing them.”

This warning alarmed the Reddit user, who feared for their animal companions’ safety. They quickly limited their boyfriend’s interaction with the animals, asking friends to watch them. However, the Reddit poster remained confused. Eventually, they visited their boyfriend’s parents again to learn the whole story. What they learned was horrifying.

According to his parents, they first caught the boyfriend killing animals when he was 13. He would mutilate and torture the animals. This included wild animals, stray dogs and cats, and even the family’s three dogs. According to the parents, when asked why he did these horrible things he would tell them that it was because he “was just bored”. They also said that, around others, their son would act as though he loved animals. Although the parents sent him to therapy, they still loved their son and were never able to bring themselves to report him to the police.

After learning this, the Reddit poster was scared and broke up with their boyfriend. Although many Reddit users were unsure if the story was true, most people advised the original poster to install cameras, tell the police, and make sure that the shelter knew about their volunteer’s history. Many warned that killing and torturing animals is often a precursor to continued violence and expressed concern for the poster and their animal companions.
