Last week, in Deep River, Connecticut, 78-year-old Jean Jameson faced a staggering 55 counts of animal cruelty. Connecticut State Police, alongside Tri-Town Regional Animal Control, intervened, seizing numerous animals from her property, which authorities described as “unsanitary.” The distressing situation has garnered attention and prompted community response amid concerns for both the animals and the elderly couple residing there.

The ordeal began in April 2023 when Tri-Town Regional Animal Control received complaints regarding barking dogs at Jameson’s residence. Upon investigation, officials discovered that Jameson, who claimed to hold a kennel license, exceeded the permitted number of dogs. Despite subsequent attempts by animal control officers to conduct required kennel checks, Jameson repeatedly denied them entry.

The situation escalated earlier this year when a dog, allegedly belonging to Jameson, arrived at a veterinary hospital in dire condition, resulting in euthanasia due to severe medical issues. Subsequent inspections by authorities revealed deplorable conditions within the residence, including the presence of dirt, trash, and inadequate food and water for the animals.

On January 25, a culmination of efforts from state police, animal control officers, and various agencies led to a search warrant executed at Jameson’s home. The operation resulted in the rescue of 43 dogs, three hens, and one rooster from inside the residence, with an additional eight hens seized from the property. Medical evaluations by veterinarians were conducted, and the animals were distributed among several animal control facilities for care and rehabilitation.

The community response has been notable, with Deep River residents rallying to Support the animals in need. Donations, including small-breed dog food, wet food, pee pads, and other essentials, have poured in, highlighting the community’s compassion and solidarity during challenging times. Deep River Town Hall serves as a collection point for donations, with provisions made for those interested in future adoption opportunities.

In the wake of the incident, Jean Jameson was released with a promise to appear in Middletown Superior Court, under the condition that she does not possess animals of any kind. While the legal proceedings unfold, the community continues its efforts to ensure the well-being of the rescued animals and offers Support to the displaced couple.
