Since being elected, President Trump (along with the rest of his administration) has been making plans to set up offshore drilling operations all along our nation’s coasts. But luckily, many of the states the federal government has proposed spreading this environmentally hazardous activity in aren’t going along with the plan. Take Oregon, for instance.
As Brown reportedly voiced her strong opinion on the issue, “At a time when the states are doing more than the federal government to protect the environment, the Trump administration is trying to allow oil rigs to be built off of every single coastline in America except for Florida. I’m tired of waiting for the federal government to come to their senses and realize this is a terrible mistake.”
Justifying why she feels oil drilling would be a “terrible mistake,” Brown pointed to the disastrous climate change effects which are already wreaking havoc on Oregon and other states across the nation, such as deadly wildfires, unprecedentedly powerful storms, and fish-killing algal blooms.
In order to stop oil drilling from worsening these impacts, Governor Brown announced that she plans to sign an executive order in order to establish a formal ban on the climate change-driving activity in the state. Further, she stated that she will be collaborating with lawmakers to make sure “that no future governor can reverse this executive order with the stroke of a pen.”
This move could be vital in protecting Oregon’s waterways from oil drilling in the near future, as Brown is currently competing in a close race for re-election against Republican State Representative Knute Buehler, a candidate who would more than likely support the Trump administration’s drilling expansion plans.
Given that climate scientists have estimated we only have around a dozen years left to make major changes in order to limit global warming and prevent extremely detrimental climate impacts, this issue is more important now than it has ever been.
While it is heartening to know that leaders in coastal states such as Oregon, California, and New Jersey are vehemently opposing oil drilling in their waters and on their lands, we still need to be doing everything in our power to help make sure those who want to progress this environmentally catastrophic practice don’t get their way.
