Kit Harington and Rose Leslie

Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie have teamed up once again, but this time it’s for an important cause. In a short film by renowned director Richard Curtis, the power couple sheds light on the “toxic relationship” between UK high street banks and the fossil fuel industry. This film is part of Curtis’s Make My Money Matter campaign, which aims to raise awareness of how consumers’ money might be financing industries that harm our planet.

The film, titled Couples Therapy, shows Harington and Leslie attempting to work through their relationship issues in a therapist’s office. As the plot unfolds, we learn that Harington’s character symbolizes a high street bank, while Leslie’s character represents an oil company. The film concludes with an on-screen message that our banks are secretly engaged with fossil fuel companies, contributing to the climate crisis.

Make My Money Matter is challenging the big five UK banks—Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, and Santander—to stop financing new oil, gas, and coal expansion. The campaign cites the latest Banking on Climate Chaos report, which states that these banks funneled a staggering $37.3 billion (£30 billion) toward the fossil fuel sector in 2022 alone.

Harington and Leslie were drawn to the project because they hadn’t previously considered the connection between their banks and the fossil fuel industry. They hope that their involvement will encourage others to question where their money is going and take action. In January, an open letter addressing the same issue was signed by other prominent figures, including Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, and Mark Rylance.

Recent research by Make My Money Matter reveals that a surprising 65 percent of customers are unaware that their bank may be financing fossil fuel companies. The campaign’s website invites people to join their open letter urging the bosses of the big five banks to stop supporting fossil fuel expansion.

It’s time for all of us to take action and demand that our banks align their investments with a sustainable future. By joining the Make My Money Matter campaign, we can show our Support for a cleaner, greener world. So let’s stand with Kit and Rose and help break up the toxic relationship between our banks and the fossil fuel industry. Together, we can make a difference!
