Activists are pushing for the Government to ban the practice. Activists want to close loopholes in the law that say that trail hunting is being used to cover up the illegal hunting of foxes. Trail hunting involves laying a scent for hounds to chase instead of a live animal.
The clash broke out in the small town of Bungay, Suffolk, where hundreds of people went for the annual festival meet of the Waveney Harriers hunt. Protestors held signs calling for an end to the Boxing Day hunts.
Using dogs to chase or kill foxes was made illegal in England and Wales in 2004 in the Hunting Act. However, animal welfare protesters have been fighting for stricter laws around fox hunting, as there have been over 430 convictions in a decade.
According to the RSPCA, fox hunting is not essential for controlling the fox population, so that argument on behalf of hunters is a myth. It’s also estimated that 400,000 foxes die each year in Britain – on roads, shot, or through natural causes. The number would be so much less if fox hunting were finally banned.
