Boxing Day is a holiday in the United Kingdom and former British colonies celebrated on the day after Christmas. It’s about helping the less fortunate. It began during the Victorian era when servants were allowed to have the day off with their families after working on Christmas Day. It’s not celebrated as a charitable holiday. But on what is supposed to be a day of kindness and generosity, prominent lawyer Jolyon Maugham began the day by clubbing a fox to death.
Just after 8am on December 26th, Maugham tweeted: “Already this morning I have killed a fox with a baseball bat. How’s your Boxing Day going?” Understandably, people became concerned and informed the RSPCA of the disturbing tweet. The situation became all the more concerning when he continued tweeting and was clearly unrepentant and nonchalant about it.
He said the fox was trapped in the netting around his chickens and he didn’t want to go through the effort of untangling it because he was wearing his wife’s small green kimono and was nursing his hangover with a coffee. Then he went on to say that if someone eats meat, it really isn’t unusual or disturbing to kill animals.
Realizing that his tweets were receiving a lot of attention, he then tweeted that killing the fox wasn’t fun and apologized for his initial distressing tweet. But he claims he contacted RSPCA to explain the situation. It’s unclear if this means the RSPCA will no longer investigate and further look into the horrific incident.
Maugham is actually in the middle of an investigation on the harm done by factory farming. Considering that one of the biggest evils of factory farming is the horrific treatment of animals, it’s bizarre that he spoke of killing animals in such an unconcerned manner.
If you want to ensure that an investigation is done into how the poor fox was killed, you can contact the RSPCA and urge them to look into it despite his defense claims.
