Dolphin Spotted Swimming Through Welsh City Surprises Locals

Residents of Newport, Wales, were treated to an extraordinary sight recently when what appeared to be a dolphin or porpoise was seen gliding through the River Usk—right in the heart of the city. According to Wales Online, the footage, captured by Ellen McAuliffe while walking her dog along a riverside path, quickly gained attention on social media as locals shared their astonishment at the marine visitor.

The River Usk is no stranger to wildlife like salmon, trout, and otters, but a dolphin is an incredibly rare guest. The last reported sighting of one this far inland in Newport dates back to 2017, making this moment even more special for wildlife enthusiasts.

While dolphins are common in the coastal waters around the UK—particularly in places like Cardigan Bay, the Gower, or Pembrokeshire—it’s highly unusual for them to venture into brackish or freshwater rivers so far from the sea. Experts suggest dolphins may occasionally swim upriver in search of food, especially where saltwater and freshwater mix near estuaries.

Bottlenose dolphins, the most commonly sighted species around Britain, are typically ocean dwellers. However, like porpoises, they can tolerate brackish water under the right conditions. But such encounters in inland areas like Newport remain a rare treat and a strong reminder of the wild, often unseen, creatures living just beyond the edge of our cities.
