Turns out, your dog might just be the best judge of character in your life. A recent study from Kyoto University in Japan found that dogs can tell when a person is untrustworthy—and they remember it. The research, led by Akiko Takaoka, involved a simple but clever test using hidden food and pointing gestures. At first, a person pointed to a container hiding treats, and the dog followed. Next, the person pointed to an empty container. When the researchers tried to trick the dogs a third time by pointing to a container that actually did have food, the dogs refused to go.
All 34 dogs in the study ignored the final gesture—showing that they’d learned not to trust someone who’d misled them. According to GOOD’s Heidi Lux, this suggests dogs don’t just respond to actions—they evaluate trustworthiness based on past experiences. Takaoka noted that dogs’ social intelligence may be even more complex than previously thought, likely shaped by thousands of years of life with humans.
John Bradshaw of the University of Bristol, not involved in the study, pointed out that dogs prefer predictability and become anxious when people behave unpredictably. Researchers plan to run similar tests with wolves to see how domestication may have enhanced these abilities in dogs.
Interestingly, similar experiments with young children at the University of California, San Diego showed that 3-year-olds trusted liars just as easily as truth-tellers. By age five, kids learned to spot deception—but dogs, it seems, don’t need years of social development to figure it out.
If dogs can sense dishonesty and act accordingly, maybe it’s time we trusted their instincts more. And for those of us who want a kinder, more sustainable world, this study is just another reminder of how sensitive, social, and intelligent our animal companions really are.
Let’s treat all animals with the respect they deserve. Choose kindness, go plant-based, and be the person your dog thinks you are.
