Dogs may be humanity’s best friends, but new research shows they are not always a friend to the planet. According to a recent article by The Guardian‘s Donna Lu, pet dogs have an “extensive and multifarious” impact on the environment, far greater than most people realize. The findings, published in Pacific Conservation Biology, highlight serious effects like disturbing wildlife, polluting waterways, and adding to global carbon emissions.

The review points out that the world’s most common large carnivore—our dogs—often harm local ecosystems. In Australia, for instance, attacks by unrestrained dogs are threatening little penguin colonies. In the United States, studies have found that animals like deer, foxes, and bobcats avoid wilderness areas when dogs are present. Even flea and tick medications used on pets wash into waterways and kill aquatic life. Plus, dog waste can alter soil and plant health, while the dry pet food industry alone has a carbon footprint the size of a small country.

Lead author Professor Bill Bateman of Curtin University stressed that the study isn’t meant to shame pet owners but to build awareness. Dogs provide huge mental and physical health benefits and even help with Conservation work. Still, Bateman recommends simple changes like keeping dogs on a leash where required and supporting sustainable pet food options to limit harm.

As animal lovers and nature protectors, we have the power to make small changes that add up. Keep your dog leashed in sensitive areas, pick up after them, and choose eco-friendly pet products. Together, we can help protect the wildlife and natural spaces we all cherish.
