As Mount Spurr outside Anchorage shows signs of an impending eruption, local pet owners are stepping up to protect their furry companions. According to an NPR report by Nathaniel Herz, residents have been rushing to buy pet-specific protective equipment like “Doggles” and canine respirators to shield dogs from volcanic ash.
Ashfall from a major eruption could reach Anchorage, posing serious health risks to both humans and animals. The city has urged residents to prepare not just for themselves, but for their pets too. Tiny, jagged particles of rock and natural glass in volcanic ash can irritate lungs and injure eyes and paws. Officials recommend keeping pets indoors as much as possible and using booties, goggles, and even masks when outside.
Pet owners like Alliana Salanguit and Jesslin Wooliver have been leading by example, training their dog, Iroh, to wear pink heart-shaped goggles and a mask with the help of plenty of treats. Anchorage’s AK Bark pet store has seen a huge surge in demand, selling more than 500 pairs of dog goggles in March alone. Owner Mark Robokoff said the popularity of Doggles and high-end Rex Specs skyrocketed once the eruption threat became real, noting, “Now, it’s a necessity.”
Getting dogs comfortable with wearing respirators ahead of time is crucial. Without training, most dogs would likely tear the gear off in seconds. Experts recommend positive reinforcement techniques, just like Iroh’s owners are using.
It’s heartwarming to see so many people prioritizing animal safety during a natural disaster. As we admire their compassion, let’s remember: our animal friends always rely on us. Whether it’s volcanoes or everyday choices, going vegan, adopting, and choosing cruelty-free products are powerful ways we can protect them every day.
