The figures surrounding animal homelessness are astounding: there are about 70 million stray animals living in the U.S. and only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year. For the unlucky dogs that are forced to fend for themselves night after night, finding food and some sort of shelter to stay out of harms’ way is truly a matter of life or death.

Thankfully, there are thousands of animal rescue groups across the nation dedicated to saving homeless animals and giving them the home they deserve. One amazing group, Special Needs Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation (SNARR), a non-profit based in New York, recently rescued a sweet pup with a story nothing short of inspiring.

This lonely pup was found on the streets hungry and weak by SNARR.

But look at her just two days after rescue! Now aptly named Merry Bell, she is currently spending the holidays in a loving foster home! SNARR notes that she is shy but very sweet. She has a broken leg that still needs to be fixed and she has Anaplasmosis which is being treated. Just look at that adorable face!

Merry Bell’s story is the perfect example of why animal rescue work is so important. If you’d like to Donate towards this sweet pup’s medical treatment, click here. Every little bit helps!

Rescuing, fostering, and adopting animals is one of the most satisfying experiences a person can have. Knowing that because of your small effort an animal will have a fair chance at a decent life is powerful.

There are numerous rescues and animal shelters out there that can help you make the right choice when seeking a companion animal. Not only will you be helping to rescue an animal from a shelter, but you will also be freeing up that space for another animal to take their place and to have their big chance at being adopted.

If you already have a fur-baby, please always spay and neuter your pets and urge your friends and family to do the same. Fostering an animal is also a great way to help end the pet homelessness crisis. Regardless if you open up your home to a dog, cat, bird, small pets, pig, any pet, you can feel wonderful knowing you have saved a life and cared for a pet who will soon find his or her forever home.
