Fuzzy caterpillars are making a big comeback in Florida, and experts are warning everyone to keep their distance. According to WKMG News 6, Tussock moth caterpillars are popping up across Oviedo, covering trees and parks as they look for places to cocoon. While they may look soft and harmless, touching one can leave you with a painful, rash-like irritation.

“They feel like fiberglass on your fingertips if you touch them,” said Lisa McDonald, City of Oviedo Communications Manager. The caterpillars don’t sting, but their tiny spines can easily break off into your skin, causing discomfort. Even their cocoons are packed with the same irritating hairs.

Adam Dale, an associate professor of Entomology at the University of Florida, explained that caterpillars are a crucial part of the local ecosystem. “They’re food for all sorts of creatures,” he said. Rather than harming them, experts suggest gently moving caterpillars using gloves or a flat object like a credit card to avoid direct contact.

If you accidentally touch one, it’s best to carefully pull out any spines with tape, wash the area with soap and water, and soothe the skin with ice or a baking soda paste. And if you need to clear cocoons after they’ve hatched, using a broom is the safest way to avoid irritation.

Nature depends on creatures like the Tussock moth caterpillar, even when they seem a little inconvenient. Instead of reacting with fear or frustration, let’s respect their role in the environment. Avoid harmful pesticides and protect the amazing biodiversity that helps keep our planet thriving—every small creature matters.
