Across the United States, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to rise. Florida, Arizona, and Texas reported record coronavirus cases, and New York governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York City was on track for Phase 2 reopening on June 22.

Two weeks after it began Phase 1, New York City in on track to start Phase 2 on June 22, Governor Cuomo announced in a press conference. The city met thresholds for cases under Phase 1 so it will continue. The state reported 17 coronavirus deaths on June 16, the lowest number since the pandemic started.

Phase 2 will see retail businesses and offices open to the public. Offices, Real Estate, In-Store Retail, and Hair Salons will also open in Phase 2.

States like Florida, Texas and Arizona that loosened restrictions now find themselves with record cases. Florida recorded 2,800 new cases on June 15, the highest number of new and confirmed cases in a single day. Governor Ron DeSantis has repeated that he will not shut the state down. Arizona and Texas also reported their highest number of cases ever. In Texas, the governor attributed the increases to delayed reporting and an outbreak at an assisted living facility.

Researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington said this data has led them to increase projections of deaths for the summer. “Unless we are effective at other things like wearing a mask, avoiding contact, it’s going to pretty inexorably lead to the second wave,” IHME Dr. Chris Murray told CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
