Petition: Repeal Arizona Law that Allows People to Hide Information About Threatened Wildlife They Own

Many endangered species have humans to blame for their lessened chances of survival. Human caused factors like hunting, development (leading to habitat loss), Climate change, and more are driving many species to extinction. That’s why humans have a responsibility to protect endangered species and do what’s possible to help them survive. The Endangered Species Act, for instance, is meant to protect endangered species, but Arizona passed a law that puts their 65 endangered species further at risk.

Of those endangered species, 44 are animals and 21 are plants. But this new law could see those animals actually become extinct. HB 2749 allows private property owners to hide any and all information about threatened wildlife living on their land.

As this petition explains: “Under the bill, information gathered by state-sponsored endangered species surveys on private property must be kept secret. In the name of “private property rights,” any and all information biologists uncover would have to be locked away, meaning that state and federal agencies tasked with tracking and creating recovery plans for endangered wildlife would be working blind.”

Property owners in areas with native animals and plants always pose a great threat to them. For instance, mountain lions are often killed by people who see them on their property and farmers and ranchers tend to kill predators if they see them near their livestock.

Information about endangered species is crucial for protection organizations to do their job in saving them. Sign this petition calling on Governor Doug Ducey and the entire Arizona state government to repeal this law.
