The Connecticut Humane Society has issued an urgent call for help as its Pet Food Pantry reaches critically low levels. According to a recent report from NBC Connecticut, the pantry has seen a staggering 345% increase in demand since 2023, now supporting over 300 pets from nearly 150 families each month.

This surge highlights how rising economic pressures are pushing more households to rely on food pantries—now not just for people, but for their furry family members too. The Humane Society says the most needed items include Purina One, Pedigree, Blue Buffalo, Friskies, and Fancy Feast. Donations can be made at the group’s locations in Newington, Waterford, and Westport, or through monetary gifts online.

The pantry plays a vital role in preventing pet abandonment, allowing struggling families to keep their beloved animals during tough times. Without adequate supplies, shelters could see a sharp rise in surrenders—placing additional strain on systems already overwhelmed.

It’s heartbreaking to imagine loyal pets going hungry because of inflation and rising living costs. But this isn’t just about pet food—it’s about compassion, community, and how we treat the most vulnerable among us.

As humans, we owe it to animals—not just our companions, but all species—to step up when they’re at risk. If you can, Donate some pet food or funds. And while you’re at it, consider supporting cruelty-free and plant-based alternatives to animal-based industries. Every small act makes a difference in creating a kinder, more sustainable world for all creatures.
