Tucked away in a Brooklyn warehouse is a game-changing innovation: sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from just water and carbon dioxide. Air Company, founded in 2017, is experimenting with power-to-liquid technology to create a more eco-friendly flying experience.

In Air Company’s SAF production facility, water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. Oxygen is released back into the atmosphere, while hydrogen is stored for the next step. Carbon dioxide, captured from an upstate New York ethanol fermentation facility, is mixed with the compressed hydrogen to create fuel.

Though currently small-scale, Air Company plans to open a plant in the coming years capable of producing thousands of gallons of SAF daily. By the end of the decade, the goal is to have multiple industrial-scale production facilities operating across the country.

Power-to-liquid technology has a significant edge over other SAF production methods, as it requires less refining. The paraffins produced in the process can be converted into aviation fuel that doesn’t need to be mixed with traditional fuel, providing a seamless drop-in replacement for petroleum-based jet fuel. The process also generates byproducts like wastewater, methanol, and ethanol, which can be used in consumer products such as perfume and vodka.

Scaling up power-to-liquid technology faces challenges like high energy demands and the need for substantial renewable electricity. However, tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act help keep the end cost of SAF comparable to traditional petroleum aviation fuel.

While power-to-liquid technology is just one part of the solution to climate change, it demonstrates that reliance on fossil fuels can be reduced. This shift benefits both the environment and society by reducing the concentration of wealth and power in the fossil fuel industry.
