Climate change is a pressing issue that affects us all, especially our children, who are particularly vulnerable to its impacts. A new national-scale report released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sheds light on the consequences of Climate change on children’s health due to physical, cognitive, behavioral, and social factors.
The comprehensive, peer-reviewed report analyzes projected health effects linked to extreme heat, air quality, changing seasons, flooding, and infectious diseases. It specifically addresses the disproportionate impact on children who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), low income, without health insurance, or have limited English proficiency.
EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan emphasizes the importance of understanding these health risks in order to develop effective, equitable strategies that will protect current and future generations. The Biden Administration has been actively addressing the climate crisis and advancing Environmental justice.
The report highlights several alarming impacts on children’s health and well-being in the US. For example, it predicts increased asthma incidence, higher numbers of asthma-related emergency department visits, more cases of Lyme disease, reduced academic achievement, and significant home displacement due to coastal flooding.
The report is a valuable resource for the Biden-Harris Administration in their efforts to address the climate crisis and promote environmental justice. Federal agencies are working together to protect children from environmental health risks, with the EPA focusing on the effects of Climate change and other environmental factors on children’s health.
Moms Clean Air Force Senior Policy Analyst Elizabeth Bechard calls the report a “call to action” for policymakers, parents, teachers, healthcare providers, and childcare workers. It emphasizes the importance of considering children’s well-being in every climate policy and highlights the urgent need for effective action against climate Pollution.
This report serves as a powerful reminder that the health of our children and their future is at stake. Let’s join the call to action, advocating for climate policies that prioritize children’s well-being, and supporting initiatives that promote Environmental justice. Together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable world for our children to inherit.
