Climate Ninjas: The Secret Warriors Battling Climate Change Denial on Twitter

Meet Maria and Arthur, two secret climate change warriors known as “ninjas” who’ve dedicated their lives to combating Climate change denial on Twitter. In 2019, they founded Team Ninja Trollhunters, a group of 25 individuals worldwide, united in their quest to debunk false information about Climate change. With backgrounds in science, these vigilant individuals fact-check misleading claims and respond with factual information like academic papers or scientific reports.

The “ninjas” initially targeted Twitter accounts that disputed Climate change science, reporting any content that violated the platform’s rules. While Climate change denial is not prohibited on Twitter, the platform has restrictions against threats, harassment, and hate speech. The “ninjas” claim that their efforts led to the suspension of around 600 Twitter accounts promoting Climate change denial.

However, their progress faced a setback when Elon Musk took over Twitter and reinstated thousands of previously suspended accounts, including some that the “ninjas” had targeted. Despite this, the group’s online battle continues, with some members witnessing an “uptick” in climate misinformation on Twitter.

Maria and Arthur have since left Twitter, but their mission lives on through other members of Team Ninja Trollhunters. Arthur believes that if more people took action as they did, the voice of climate change deniers would be drowned out by those advocating for the truth.
