Good news for the upcoming election. A new report from the Cause and Social Influence Initiative says that climate change is the top issue for 27% of millennials and 34% of Generation Z voters.

As the top social issue for 2019, young people are seeing Climate change covered in news media and online. “This year’s research began in the wake of Greta Thunberg’s sail to the Climate change Summit and heavy media coverage of her trip and the issue; Climate change subsequently was the top social issue for 2019,” according to the report.

Other polling shows similar data about Climate change. An April 2019 CNN poll also found that Climate change was the top issue, over healthcare, for democratic or democratic-leaning independent voters. The Sierra Club’s 2020 Climate Voter Tracking poll is a monthly poll to see how candidates match primary voters goals on Climate change. In their September 2019 poll, 60% of Democratic Primary Voters “strongly Support” the question about powering the United States with 100% renewable energy. And 56% “strongly Support” a national plan to tackle Climate change and inequality.

Other issues that concerned young voters were civil rights, immigration, health care reform, and mental health and social services.

Millennial and Gen Z climate activists have been making headlines all year. Greta Thunberg‘s #FridaysForFuture movement brought out millions to strike against Climate change in September 2019. Other young activists from Canada to Alaska are speaking out against governments and the fossil fuel industry.
