Chris Packham Condemns “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” for Animal Exploitation

Chris Packham

Renowned wildlife broadcaster and conservationist Chris Packham has penned a scathing letter to the hosts of “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!”—Ant and Dec—accusing the popular reality show of exploiting animals for entertainment. In his missive, shared on social media, Packham expresses his frustration, highlighting that his previous attempts to engage with the presenters on the issue were met with silence.

The letter, viewed over 1.3 million times on social media, criticizes the show as a “grotesque blot” on the reputations of both Ant and Dec and ITV. Packham asserts that the continued use of animals for amusement on the show reflects a dangerous disconnect between the media’s practices and the growing global concern for environmental issues.

Packham, clarifying that he writes in his personal capacity and not as the president of the RSPCA, reveals that the charity received a staggering 17,000 complaints about the treatment of animals on the show last year. He accuses the program of undermining the “fundamental respect for life” necessary to inspire action against the climate crisis, emphasizing the severity of the issue with 28% of the world’s monitored species facing extinction.

The wildlife expert points out the diminishing viewership of the show, suggesting that perhaps a format change is needed. He urges Ant and Dec to consider the global shift away from exploitative practices, citing the disappearance of circuses, dancing bears, and the reduction of activities like cock and dog fighting. Packham contends that “the cruel exploitation of wildlife for gratuitous entertainment” tarnishes the UK’s reputation as a nation of animal lovers.

Instead of perpetuating the mistreatment of animals, Packham proposes a different approach for the reality show. He suggests that a percentage of profits be donated to Conservation charities, with Ant and Dec hosting a program focused on wildlife conservation—a positive initiative to counterbalance the negative impact of the current format.

In response to Packham’s accusations, a spokesperson for “I’m a Celebrity…” maintains that they adhere to all laws related to animal usage and have stringent environmental protocols in place. They assert that animal welfare and safety are their primary priorities during any filming involving animals, with qualified handlers present at all times. The spokesperson assures that they keep the RSPCA informed of their activities and invite them to attend the site at any time.
