Farm Uses Sunflowers for Wildlife Conservation

The Spalding farm has created a unique way of sustaining itself as well as giving back to Conservation.

They have done this by planting a 100-acre farm full of sunflowers. The seeds are used to make bird food, while 4% of their sales go back to wildlife conservation programs.

The 3000 tonnes of seeds are used to make wild bird seed mixes that are then, sold to online buyers. Their business has grown more and more each year.

Nicholas Watts, a farmer, said, “We never imagined that would happen, but every year goes by, and we sell more seeds, and it’s very pleasing to think that there are so many people who are trying to do their bit for the environment.”

The farm is also a kind of wildlife habitat in itself, as it is surrounded by ponds, hedges, and a medley of wildflowers that attract insects and birds.

Watts said, “If they want a more wildlife-friendly garden, they should have more flowers in it because flowers bring insects, and insects bring the birds. I’ve always liked feeding birds & now I’m feeding far more than I could ever imagine I would be doing.”

This farm is a stunning example of people working hand in hand with the local wildlife instead of against them. As well as building up a small business to the point where it can give back to nature and wildlife.
