Gizmo the Chihuahua had a rough start in life. At only three weeks old, the tiny puppy was handed in at a vet’s office after being found close to death in the streets. It was unclear whether the young Chihuahua would pull through. Fortunately, with lots of love and care, he made it. A recent video posted to the TikTok account @_gizmo_thenaughty_chichi shows Gizmo’s remarkable transformation.

When the Chihuahua puppy was first abandoned at the vet’s office, he had unstable glucose and was given low survival odds. According to TikTok, the tiny puppy would only eat cat food. Amazingly, he stabilized and beat the odds. As Gizmo healed, his human fell in love with him. One of the staff members took him home one evening and couldn’t return him without knowing he had a good home. So, she adopted him! Now Gizmo has a home full of love, just as he deserves.
Sadly, Chihuahuas like Gizmo make up a high percentage of the shelter dog population. In Texas, they are the second most euthanized breed of dog according to a Chihuahua rescue based in the state. California also sees a high volume of the breed in shelters. They even outnumber Pit Bulls, according to the animal rescue Compassion Without Borders.
Hollywood may be to blame for the proliferation of this small dog breed. Many popular films featuring Chihuahua dogs have been produced, which may have led to a spike in their popularity. However, when humans tire of them, they may be cruelly abandoned. Luckily, Gizmo was taken in and cared for, but not all Chihuahuas are as lucky. Remember when adopting a dog consider not only how “cute” they are, but also whether their activity level, temperament, and needs are a good fit.
