If you’re storing leftovers or sipping tea, you might be consuming more than just dinner. According to CNET, everyday kitchen items—from air fryers to tea bags—could be quietly adding microplastics to your food. Americans already consume an estimated 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year, and new studies suggest our kitchens may be a big part of the problem.
Plastic containers are a major culprit. A 2023 study found that microwaving food in plastic can release the highest levels of microplastics and nanoplastics into meals. Even storage at room temperature or in the fridge can release billions of tiny particles over time. While “BPA-free” labels sound reassuring, they don’t necessarily mean microplastic-free. Glass is still the safest option.
Black plastic utensils and non-stick air fryers are also potential offenders. Research published in 2024 found that PTFE-coated cookware, the same material used in many air fryers, can shed microplastics when scratched or overheated. That’s especially concerning given that many brands market these coatings as safe. Opting for stainless steel, wood, or glass cookware can significantly cut down exposure.
Even your calming cup of tea might not be innocent. A 2025 review showed that some tea bags can release more than a billion microplastic particles into hot water. The safest choice? Loose-leaf tea brewed in a stainless-steel infuser or glass teapot.
While the science on long-term health impacts is still evolving, it’s clear that reducing plastic in the kitchen supports both personal wellbeing and the environment. Every swap—from glass storage jars to metal utensils—helps reduce plastic waste and keeps our food, water, and planet a little cleaner.
Start small: replace one plastic item today and build a kitchen that’s better for your body and the Earth.
