The unfortunate truth is that there are about 70 million stray animals in the U.S. With so many cats and dogs crammed into pounds, shelters and sanctuaries, we love hearing stories of animal adoption. After all, we here at One Green Planet believe it’s best to adopt, not shop!

A new program in Utah has a great idea to facilitate an animal adoption. As part of the Red Mountain Resort in Utah, shelter pups from the Ivins Animal Shelter in Ivins, Utah hike with guests, called The Pound Puppy Hike program.

Throughout the hike, which can last about two hours, imagine the bonding that happens between the pooch and the hikers. At the end of the hike, visitors get the option of taking the pup home with them for adoption! What a great way to help rescue dogs find forever homes and help humans find a furry best friend!

The Ivins Animal Shelter has a no-kill policy, and its adoption rate is 99.7 percent. It seems like this tactic for finding forever home for rescued dogs is working out. In fact, Aggie Smith, who started as a volunteer and is now the shelter manager and an animal control officer, told one reporter that “we’ve had 30 dogs adopted from this walk.”
