Datacenters have long been criticized for their enormous energy demands and heavy water use. Now, a new threat is raising alarm: PFAS Pollution. According to The Guardian, advocates warn that the rapid boom in artificial intelligence facilities may be fueling the release of toxic “forever chemicals” into the environment.
PFAS — a family of around 16,000 chemicals — are used to make products water- and stain-resistant, but they also linger for centuries without breaking down. Exposure has been linked to cancer, kidney disease, high cholesterol, weakened immunity, and birth defects, making them one of the biggest public health hazards of our time.
Big Tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft rely on PFAS-based gases (f-gases) to cool servers. While the industry claims emissions are minimal, leaks and disposal issues mean these chemicals inevitably escape. Once airborne, many degrade into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), itself considered a PFAS by most of the world, and research shows it may harm reproductive systems. Studies also reveal TFA levels are rising quickly in air, water, and even human blood.
PFAS contamination doesn’t stop with cooling systems. The semiconductors, cables, and piping inside datacenters are also treated with PFAS, which can leach into the air. When equipment is discarded, the chemicals end up in landfills or are incinerated — but burning them doesn’t fully destroy PFAS, instead breaking them into smaller, still-toxic fragments. This adds to the growing electronic waste crisis, already devastating wildlife and communities near production plants.
Despite mounting evidence, there is little federal oversight. State-level groups are now pushing for stronger reporting laws, demanding transparency from tech giants. Communities near PFAS manufacturers like Chemours in West Virginia and North Carolina have already reported sickness tied to contamination.
The race for AI dominance shouldn’t come at the cost of poisoning our water, soil, and future. Choosing renewable energy, cutting chemical dependence, and supporting safer, plant-based innovation can help ensure technology serves people without destroying the planet.
